Los Angeles – October 10, 2018 – New Directions for Veterans (NDVets), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides comprehensive housing and development services to homeless and at-risk veterans, announced the organization will host its annual Veterans Canteen gala to benefit homeless veterans on October 13th, 2018 at the Skirball Cultural Center beginning at 6pm.
New Directions for Veterans is a nonprofit organization based on the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs campus that provides housing and social services to about 1,800 veterans each year. The organization has served veterans facing homelessness, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other challenges recover and take back their lives for more than 25 years.
The event will honor community leaders and media for their support and advocacy for veterans. This year’s special honorees include Maj Gen (Ca) John E. Bianchi, Ret., who dedicated more than 40 years of his life to the armed forces, and Director Anouar H. Smaine for his film, “Battle Fields,” that brings awareness to the effects of PTSD.
Guests will also have the opportunity to demo MIND AT WAR, a new VR experience produced by the Oscar-nominated immersive studio, RYOT, that provides an intimate look at an Iraq War veteran’s struggle with PTSD. Directed by Eisner-nominated digital artist, Stuart “Sutu” Campbell, the experience premiered this past summer, and has since received widespread acclaim for its poignant and visceral depiction of the challenges veterans can face upon returning from combat.
“The Veterans Canteen gala is our opportunity to honor both our veterans and those advocating for them,” said USMC Capt. (Ret) Leo Cuadrado, Chief Operating Officer of NDVets. “As more and more veterans return home from overseas conflicts, they need our support now more than ever, and we are grateful to know we have the support of our partners and the community behind us to help raise the much-need funds to continue providing life-saving services to veterans seeking help.”
